Marga Mathilde De Jong

Marga de Jong is the eldest child of the cattle dealer Adolf. As a child, she witnesses an SA troop shouting anti-Jewish songs in front of her home and beating up her father.
The day after the pogrom - the day before her 14th birthday - Marga rushes to her parents' devastated home and finds her mother and siblings in a neighbor's pigsty. Her father, beaten and wounded, had already fled to Holland. Marga's mother sells the house in Ahaus far below its value and arranges for her children to leave for the Netherlands. Despite her best efforts, she is unable to bring the family, which has been torn apart, overseas together. Frieda receives an entry permit to the Dominican Republic, while Marga's father ends up in the Westerbork refugee camp. The children are placed in various homes or families.

Marga lives in Nijmegen, Scheveningen, Winterswijk and Zutphen. When the Germans invaded the Netherlands, Marga went into hiding on farms in Lintelo. Although German soldiers were temporarily quartered on the farms, Marga survived.

After the liberation, Marga waits in vain for the return of her murdered family members. At the end of the 1940s, she moves to Australia with her husband. There she learns that her mother survived the Holocaust in the Dominican Republic. Marga's mother then moves in with her daughter and witnesses the birth of Marga's two sons.
